13 December 2013 – From Monday, 16 December 2013, all 16,600 ComfortDelGro taxis will be installed with an extra “eye” as an added safety and security measure.
The in-vehicle J002B cameras, which will be installed for free over the next three months, are equipped with a 140° focus lens and a 2.7” LCD screen. The high-quality devices, which have special “low-light” recording functions, will be fixed in such a way that they are only able to record happenings outside the taxi. The cameras cannot be adjusted to face inward so passengers need not worry that their privacy will be compromised.
The cameras, which retail for S$388 each, are programmed to start recording once the engine is turned on and will do so continuously for up to four hours. Its sensor is also able to activate one-minute video recordings the moment it detects sudden shocks to the taxi. Positioned behind the rear view mirror, the cameras do not come with voice recording features.
